It was the last day of the trading year and statistics at the end of the year shows up India as among the worst performers globally, particularly among Asian markets. The performance of the Indian markets in 2011 was as such: Sensex was down 25% and Nifty down 25%. Realty index was down 52%, Bank Nifty index down 32%, metal index down 47%, CNX IT index down 18%, oil & gas index down 30% and auto index down 20%.

Today's Market Review
The markets performed well today and barring healthcare, all sectoral indices closed positive. The Sensex closed at 15966 (provisional), up 227 points from its previous close, and the Nifty closed at 4776 (provisional), up 62 points. The CNX Midcap index was up 0.8% and the BSE Smallcap index gained 1.1%. The market breadth was positive with advances at 935 against declines of 495 on the NSE.
